Hi guys!
I mentioned in a post before (here) that I might do a post on Turkish rock songs. My favorites. So, here we go!
Turkish rock is my favorite-ever genre. First, it is not hard rock and I am not a fan of heavy music. Second, it has traditional Turkish tunes in addition to rock tunes and I love east and west mixes. Third, the lyrics. Oh, they are the most powerful in any genre I have listened to. I will provide links to translations but they don’t do the greatest justice to it. But at least they will give a taste.
Now, just sit back and listen to them and let me know which ones you like and why. If none, that is fine too, but also tell me why again:) Also, I will put only 6 here, but if you guys are interested, I have a lot more in my pocket:)
Bir Derdim Var
This is an iconic song by the band Mor ve Otesi, who I was able to see and listen to in a concert in LA this year! This is their best known song and I don’t know how many times I listened to it! I think this is my favorite Turkish rock song.
Here are translated lyrics:

Aman Aman
The band, Duman, is known for very heavy songs. lyric-wise and singing-wise. This is my favorite song by them and here are the lyrics:

‘Aman’ is an exclamation word we use in a lot of occasions. When we don’t care about something, when we feel heavy etc.
Haberin Yok Ölüyorum
This is the most depressive song by the most depressive band, in case you want to feel depressed. It is in the title “You don’t know it but I am dying” and you can hear it in the singing too.
Here are the lyrics: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/haberin-yok-oelueyorum-im-dying-and-you-dont-know-it.html
Anlasana
Now, a song by a solo artist (Haluk Levent) and not a band and he is an iconic singer and this is an iconic song. Very heart-felt lyrics. Lyrics: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/beni-biraz-anlasana-just-understand-me-little-bit.html
Sen Ağlama
Again a band, Badem. Very emotional song and iconic again. Lyrics: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/sen-aglama-Dont-cry.html
Kafile
Band alert! Yüksek Sadakat. The frontman’s voice is oh-so-good. Lyrics, so good, almost sufi-like. Here they are: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/kafile-echelon.html
I hope you enjoy this list!
I can only listen to the first, fourth and sixth. I liked the music, first one especially. Rest videos are unavailable here I guess.

Hmm, I wonder why they are not all available, as all are on YouTube. First one is my favorite too!

I think it must be a rights issue as I can only watch the same 3 videos as everyone else. There quite dark these songs and they remind me of the Brit pop stuff that I listened to as a teenager.

It is probably the rights issues but they seem to be available here. At least you can listen to 3😊 they are dark, yes, and I think that is what I like about them😊

I got a feeling for what the songs were about before I even looked up the lyrics. It’s nice when you can understand the meaning of a song without the need to understand the actual lyrics.

Yeah! They are in the tune! I think that is why I like Turkish rock too. The feelings are in every part of the songs.

It’s why I got into Greek songs but they become very samey. There traditional or cheesy pop generally on YouTube or iTunes. These are pretty much the only outlets as I’ve never found any stores even in the big cities.

Hmm, I am not a fan of pop (turkish or otherwise) either, I think for the sam reason. I am glad other good types exist, though

I went off music years ago as after 90s pop, 2000s Spanish pop and 2010s Greek pop with Eurovision and Russian pop sprinkled into that mix …

Yeah, I understand! But in fact, Turkish rock made me come back to it. I feel like I finally found my thing😊

I heard Greek music that infuses Turkish rhythms, Spanish rhythms, Arabic influences so they are getting better but I’ve also heard very Americanised versions too. So it goes both ways.

Yeah! Same for Turkish songs. I am more of a cultural mix kind of songs. I like American songs, pop or not, but when Turkish singers imitate them as they are, that does not sound good. I am not opposed to mixing american tunes with traditional tunes though.
