Let’s complete the story I started below:
The birds just would not shut up. The city had emptied. No people, no cars. The birds had arrived instead. He liked it at the beginning. It was refreshing to see the birds and hear them. After a while, however, it started annoying him because the birds were chirping non-stop. He decided to put an end to this and climbed on his roof to the nest of the birds. [Your continuation goes here]
He opened up the bag of bread that he’d brought up with him. “Do you know” he said to the birds as he crumbles a crust over the nest “that bread is a hot commodity now?” He watched a moment as the birds pecked at the offering. “We can’t find bread, and then we can’t find flour and yeast.” He started to toss some crumbs along the roof as the chirping lessened. “The lack of these things makes me question the whole ‘I’m gluten free movement’…One bird looked up at him, waiting for more words of wisdom. “So by sharing this treasured commodity…” he threw more bread to the birds “can we come to some sort of detente about the noise thing?”

“Excuse me birds. Some of us have stuff to do!”
And then he realised how ridiculous he would look to anyone passing by. A six-foot-four, scruffy thirty-something, skeletal man, whose friends nicknamed scarecrow.
He chortled as he thought of the analogy and then it occurred to him that he’d loved ‘Worzel Gummidge’ as a boy. A scarecrow who wasn’t the best bird-scare-device ever made.
He realised it had become quiet and that he’d been thinking out loud. The birds were watching him, curiosity clear on their tiny faces; heads tilted at angles illustrating their interest as though they understood. Perhaps they, like he, just wanted a decent conversation.
Lockdown was testing his mental health in more ways than the one which included talking to birds.
He was finding the lack of contact with other humans difficult. He wondered if he chatted to the birds every day it would help him and maybe also calm them down.
Climbing down his step ladder he noticed the birds had hopped to the edge and were watching him curiously.
“Same time tomorrow chaps?” He asked as he stepped from the bottom step.
Silence.
‘Aah, bliss’ he sighed, laying the ladder down.

What do you tell them?

I tell Mr and Mrs Blackbird where the best worms are! We have 3 bird feeders hanging where I can see them from my sofa. We see bluetits, longtailed tits, sparrows, collared doves, jackdaws, chaffinches. They sometimes fight for the food and my hubby has said I sound like a sports commentator giving a running narrative of who is doing what! Nature is so beautiful and with the streets being so quiet there’s so much more to see and hear. One thing I’ve noticed is the seagulls from the coast are coming inland as they don’t have tourists eating chips, ice cream along the fronts (I live 20 minutes from our East coast- UK)

They were very big birds. He curled up in their nest and fell asleep.

Hey, your comment went to spam. Just realized this. Sorry.
I love the shortness and the cleverness of your ending! He became one with the birds!

Then he looked into the nest. They were little cutie baby birds. Seems to be born just before 2 3 days. They were skinny but looking just like new born babies.. amazing.. they got scared because of this alien sneaking out. They changed chirping pattern and their parents came.. “chirping language” he guess..how they could understand..its just same sound!!! He got irritated but thought to observe sometime. He went away. Their parents feed hardly to one baby but cant make for others. One biggie went and returned with nothing.. He understood. He went and came with some grains and water pot. Kept near nest and moved back. After “testing” it carefully mother takes food to kiddos and suddenly he listened chirping pattern which was different but happy..
No people out,no usual resources of food n water for them.. try to make it available for them in your garden area or balcony or rooftop… you will see listen to “happy chirping”🙂
