Hello everyone,
We are here to do some Sunday reading again. Welcome you all!
I want to discuss something I often struggle with today: acceptance.
I come from a family of government workers. In Turkey, a government worker can be a teacher at a public school, a doctor at a public hospital etc. When you work at a government institution, you are guaranteed for life. The state will not fire you and will protect you in your retirement too.
That also means a very predictable life. Often, such families become more inclined to predict everything in life and when something unpredictable happens, they overreact. Coming from such a family, I grew up with that mentality too.
But then, I chose an unpredictable life path. I change interests and careers every now and then. I changed the country I live in etc. And yet, I sometimes still struggle with accepting changes…

Betful, I really enjoyed your piece. I agree, it is much easier to accept things I like over others. I believe we are human after all. For me it comes from trusting in the moment, whatever it brings. Doesn’t’ mean there won’t be pain, doesn’t mean I’ll be happy or feel good in every moment. (that may be more for the lobotomized.) But to believe you are alive and part of something much bigger, life which is to be trusted. Just to clarify when I speak of trusting life I a not speaking of trusting humanity necessarily. Trusting the Energy of Life/Love. Thanks for an interesting read.

More power to you Betul!! In my family too I am the only one who worked in private sector and doesn’t have a pension! My father and grandpa and siblings were all in government jobs!!
I started with a rewarding government job 50 years back. After ten years I quit and my whole family was flabbergasted and unhappy. I kept changing and learning and evolving and 20 odd years back quit the rat race to start to live 😅

This feels somewhat familiar, but I worked in a government job only for a year and I knew I would not stay in that job even when I got in:) Honestly, this feels free but I also need to learn to live:)

You are very blessed and I’m happy for you. Although I’m not in a predictable job or life, I still struggle with accepting change when things don’t quite go as I plan. I don’t think anyone likes change. This was a great post and I enjoyed the read because it was relatable still.

Thanks for reading and commenting! I am not great with changes but I grew to enjoy them more, although they still challenge me. I think change challenges a deeply-rooted human side of us, which is the desire for safety. So it will always be somewhat uncomfortable.

Change is the only changeless thing, as the Bhagavad Gita says. No one can accept all changes, because many of them must be happening against our wishes, beliefs, knowledge and even cultural stand points. But I think one can control changes, though to a very small extent, by choosing the way we live and responds to life. Once a change occurs, there is no other way but to accept it. The earlier we do, the better. See how we have accepted the changes brought in by Corona ! Acceptance instantly changes our attitude to change.
Nice writing Betul. Keep going.

Yes! Last year has indeed been a test or training for us to learn to accept changes. It is a core lesson we need to learn.

Thank you for sharing!!… for me the ideal state is one where I am happy and the best way to do that is follow my heart… “It is not easy to find happiness within ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.” (Agnes Repplier).. change is the law of life and as long as I venture down life’s highway with a open mind change is not a problem… “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain”. (Author Unknown)… 🙂
Until we meet again..
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your way,
May songbirds serenade your
every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.
